Five acres in Lino Lakes, worked by hand and by the birds. Here's how we grow what you pick up.
Lino Lakes sits on the Anoka Sand Plain: light, sandy ground that warms fast in spring and drains well, and that needs feeding to stay rich. So we feed it. The pasture pens roll to fresh grass every few days, and the birds leave the ground better than they found it. What the birds give the pasture, the pasture gives the garden.
We broke new beds this year, right alongside the existing garden, and opened more pasture for the flock. The tiller went through in late summer. Next spring, it grows.
Two fields, turned this year, and each one has a job. One grows more of what you pick up at the stand. The other gives the flock fresh ground.
Room for more rows of the vegetables you already find at the stand, and space to try a few new ones. More rows means more to pick each week.
Open pasture for the chickens. The pens move across it onto fresh grass, so the birds spend their days on clean ground, raised the same careful way they are now.
